Common Pet Emergencies

Emergencies can occur in a number of different ways. Some of the common emergencies that our vets encounter are:

  • Seizures or Fits: If your pet has a seizure, make the room dark and quiet for them. Try to keep them cool and away from anything that could cause injury but avoid touching them near their mouth in case they bite. Monitor the length of this seizure and let the emergency team know about this when calling ahead.
  • Overheating: Offer your pet tepid water to drink and call the practice.
  • Bleeding: Clean the dirty wound with clean, warm salt water before applying pressure to it to try and stop the bleeding. Call ahead to the practice for further advice.
  • Attacked by a Dog: Do not attempt to break up a dog fight yourselves. Douse both dogs with water to separate them before then keeping your dog warm and wrapped in a blanket. If you think they may have broken a bone, try and keep them still, moving them on a hard surface if possible. Keep their mouth and nose exposed.
  • Hit by a Car: Similarly to the above, try to keep your pet warm, and only move them on a moveable surface if you suspect broken bones. Keep their mouth and nose exposed at all times.

Pet emergencies can come in any form and at any time. If your pet has been involved in an accident, been injured or has suffered a seizure, call emergency vets in Guildford, Alder Vets today and let us help your pet.
